A mobile baby care room was set up at Chegongmiao Metro Station in Futian District on Tuesday, the International Children’s Day, Shenzhen Evening News reported.

Shenzhen Municipal Women’s Federation (SMWF), Shenzhen Women and Children’s Development Foundation and Shenzhen Metro Group co-launched the mobile facilities for mothers and babies.

“As the Metro stations have a large stream of passengers, the mobile rooms featuring flexibility, intelligence and space-saving can bring convenience to nursing mothers,” said a manager with Shenzhen Micro Space Construction Technology Co. Ltd.

The series of moving baby care room facilities is the first of its kind in the world and is equipped with wash basins. The 1.6-square-meter space is available for mothers to breastfeed their babies and clean and disinfect baby’s bottles at Chegongmiao Station.

Except for the handrail and door lock, most equipment is contactless to prevent cross infection amid the pandemic. The contactless parts, which mothers don’t have to touch, include the faucet, the soap dispenser and the trash can.

Meanwhile, an advanced disinfection machine can automatically disinfect the entire space after someone leaves. The water storage tank will also be disinfected all the time.

The number of newborns in Shenzhen is over 200,000 every year, and a space allocated for nappy changes and breastfeeding is important for mothers with babies. A total of 1,091 baby care rooms have been installed in the airport, Metro stations, train stations, shopping malls, hospitals, parks and other large public areas. Shenzhen has almost achieved a full coverage of baby care rooms in public places across the city.
