Folk arts: bamboo-plaiting and more
Shenzhen Daily 2021-03-03 17:01

Popular folk arts in Futian District include bamboo-plaiting, grass-plaiting, silk-knitting and embroidery, and cooking. Representative skills include knitting silk belts and making fishing nets.

Silk belts often feature six colors: red, pink, gold, yellow, green and white. They are normally about 1.5 centimeters wide and 50 to 80 centimeters long, with creative patterns such as palm fronds or little turtles. Techniques for making them are well known in Shangsha, Shixia, Shawei, Huanqing, Shuiwei, Huanggang and Shangmeilin villages, where they were passed on from mothers to daughters. However, due to the city's fast urbanization and development, most of the skills have been lost to time.

The making of fishing nets is a strong heritage of Shazui Village, which used to thrive on the fishing trade. Villagers formed a complete knitting technique and invented more than 20 different types of fishing nets, which were suitable for catching different kinds of fish in different seasons. However, as the fishing trade has diminished in the village for more than 20 years, today, only villagers older than 50 know how to make the area's trademark fishing nets.
