The Shenzhen Library and Shenzhen Concert Hall in central Futian attract throngs of visitors on weekends and holidays. People come not only to peruse books, engage in study sessions or revel in music from around the world, but also to bask in the urban ambiance enhanced by the sophisticated architecture of these two iconic cultural landmarks designed by Japanese master Arata Isozaki (1931-2022).

Now visitors can explore the design concepts and architectural features of Isozaki’s works at the retrospective “Arata Isozaki: In Formation” at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning.

This comprehensive exhibition, which showcases the architectural models, sketches, installations, paintings, and videos of the distinguished recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, traces his evolving thoughts in different periods from multiple perspectives that have defined his remarkable career.

The exhibition articulates Isozaki’s practices through nine pivotal concepts, illustrating some of his visionary ruminations across various cultures, fields, and eras. Visitors can marvel at models of his iconic works, such as the Tsukuba Center Building, the Shanghai Zendai Himalayas Center, and the Qatar National Convention Center, all of which represent significant contributions to the realm of architectural art.

As one of the most innovative and pioneering architects of the 20th century, Isozaki not only rooted his craft in Japanese heritage but also embraced a global outlook that champions cultural diversity. He has weaved historical reflections into profoundly creative architectural expressions.

At the exhibition, visitors can also admire installation artworks that highlight Isozaki’s interdisciplinary ventures beyond architecture.
