Fashion enthusiasts and art lovers are in for a treat, as three unique exhibitions in downtown Futian District are offering a rare opportunity to delve into the past and future of fashion. Only they have to move quickly, as the shows will wrap up this Sunday.

These exhibitions, which are the highlight of the Second Futian Fashion Week, are displayed at the Great Art Space on the first floor of the Great China International Financial Center.

Throughout his illustrious career, the iconic fashion figure Karl Lagerfeld maintained a steadfast belief that art stood apart from, and perhaps even contradicted, fashion. Interestingly, one of the exhibitions challenges this notion by featuring futuristic couture as the subject of paintings. Over 200 such artworks, contributed by designers from France, South Korea, Australia, Romania, as well as China’s Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, provide a glimpse into future fashion trends and the diverse cultural backgrounds of their creators.

Another exhibition showcases nearly 100 meticulously crafted outfits by talented Chinese designers, emphasizing the innovative use of traditional fabrics and tailoring techniques as a means to connect the past with the future.

By reviving traditional techniques like tie-dye and embroidery in a contemporary context, these garments cater to the preferences of today’s youth with fresh and modern designs.

Of particular interest to history buffs is an exhibition dedicated to vintage dresses from around the world. From the elegant Chinese cheongsams of the 1920s to the elaborate gowns crafted in 1970s Europe, these ensembles transport viewers back in time, prompting reflection on the shifting societal currents and evolving mainstream ideals. Visitors can also marvel at hand-drawn sketches by designers of yesteryears, vintage fashion magazines, and an array of jacquard fabrics on display.

In addition to the exhibitions, this year’s Futian Fashion Week featured seminars, runway shows by emerging designers, and a short video contest inviting participation from the public.

The exhibitions are accessible for free from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Mondays.
