SZSO to premiere Elmar Lampson’s work
Shenzhen Daily 2024-10-23 10:16

Conducted by Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) music director Lin Daye, the ensemble will premiere contemporary German composer Elmar Lampson’s “Stormy Sea No. 2” this Saturday. The orchestra will also perform Fiorillo Federigo’s “Sinfonia Concertante in F Major for Two Oboes” and Dvořák’s eighth symphony.

“The Stormy Sea No. 2” follows up Lampson’s first symphony of the same title commissioned by SZSO, which debuted in Shenzhen last December. The first installment tries to captivate the immense power and formidable recklessness of the ocean with music. In the second work, Lampson depicts the loneliness and yearnings felt by beachgoers at sunrise, when the ocean is shrouded in mists. The piece delves into people’s reflections on the meaning of life, as well as their curiosity for the unknown and awe for nature.

Federigo, best known for his “36 Caprices for the Violin,” was himself a celebrated violinist and violist. He naturally wrote many pieces for the strings, in a style that is graceful, charming and melodious. His double oboe concerto is full of surprises and fun.

Ramon Ortega Quero, principal oboist of Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Echo Classic award winner, and SZSO’s principal oboist Cui Xiaozheng will serve as soloists while performing the piece.

The second half of the concert will feature Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 8 in G Major,” a piece overshadowed by his ninth “New World Symphony” but charming as well. Cheery and lyrical, it draws a lot of inspiration from the Bohemian folk music that Dvořák loved. All four movements feature a variety of themes, and occasionally the development of these themes seems like improvisation.
