Yukie Nishimura to grace SZ Concert Hall
Shenzhen Daily 2025-11-07 11:24

Yukie Nishimura, known to her Chinese fans as the "Queen of Healing Piano," will grace the stage at Shenzhen Concert Hall tomorrow evening.

Once a child prodigy, Nishimura has blossomed into an accomplished pianist-composer, crafting and performing works that blend beautiful melodies with ethereal tones, showcasing a fusion of diverse musical styles.

Nishimura displayed a natural gift for music from an early age, winning the Osaka Children's Piano Competition at just 10 years old. She later studied at the Toho Gakuen Music School's affiliated junior high school and continued at the school's senior program. Notable alumni from the institution include Seiji Ozawa and Mitsuko Uchida.

Her more than a decade of training there helped shape a distinctive style — melding the technical precision of the Russian school with the poetic tone colors of the French tradition.

At 19, her performance at the Yamaha Piano Competition captured the attention of Ryuichi Sakamoto, who praised her as “the sound of the new century,” applauding how her music seamlessly blends classical elegance with pop sensibility.

That same year, she released her debut album “Angelique,” for which she composed ten pieces, arranged eight, and performed all the piano parts herself.

The album sold over 830,000 copies, becoming Japan's top-selling instrumental solo album of the decade and cementing her status in the music industry.

She went on to release a series of successful albums throughout the 1980s, and by the 1990s, she was composing for film and television.

Her debut TV soundtrack for the hit drama “101st Proposal” moved countless viewers.

While Chinese audiences may not be familiar with her name, many know her works —adapted with lyrics — as beloved songs such as Aaron Kwok's "I Will Be Fine" and Eason Chan's "Letter of Sorrow."

To this day, Nishimura maintains a fervent passion for creation, always carrying a score notebook with her. Like keeping a diary, she plays the melodies that come to mind on the piano each day.

At tomorrow’s concert, she will perform more than 20 beloved pieces.

As the sounds of "Believe in Tomorrow," "While Listening to the Music Box," "The Scent of Time," and a medley of Chopin’s works wash over the audience, they may find that time has not truly passed — it has simply been transformed into melodies, hidden within every piano note from Nishimura’s fingertips.

Come to Shenzhen Concert Hall tomorrow evening, and immerse yourself in the gentle universe woven by Nishimura’s piano and sweet memories.
