This Sunday evening, which also marks International Women’s Day, outstanding young pianist Luo Wei will take the stage at Shenzhen Concert Hall, and offer audiences a heartfelt holiday gift through music.
A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in the United States, where she studied under Gary Graffman and Robert McDonald, Luo is widely admired for her playing — both profoundly poetic and powerfully expressive. She signed with Universal Music at just 17, the same year she received the Gilmore Young Artist Award. Her self-titled debut album, “Wei Luo,” released by Universal, earned acclaim from publications such as the UK’s Gramophone magazine.

Luo Wei is widely admired for her powerful and poetic playing.
In 2023, her album “Luo Wei: Gazing,” released under the NCPA Classics label, was featured on Apple Music’s Top 100 Songs of the Year and named QQ Music’s Classical Album of the Year. Her most recent double album, “Through the Storm,” featuring major Russian piano concertos, received homepage recommendations from both QQ Music and Apple Music shortly after its release on Dec. 13 last year.
In addition to the album, Luo co-wrote, produced, and starred in a complementary short film titled “The Melody of Twilight,” which explores the nuanced relationship between music and mental health, illustrating how music can serve as a lifeline in moments of emotional crisis.
Luo’s artistry is distinguished not only by her technical brilliance but also by her profound emotional resonance, an ability to channel depth and sensitivity through every note.
The program on Sunday evening opens with Handel’s elegant yet dramatic “Chaconne in G Major,” followed by the tender lyricism of Schubert’s “Serenade.” She will then take on Brahms’ virtuosic and powerful “Variations on a Theme by Paganini,” a work that demands both stamina and expressive command.
The second half begins with Philip Glass’ “Metamorphosis II,” a modern masterpiece inspired by Franz Kafka’s novella of the same name. Through subtly shifting harmonies and layered repetitions, the piece offers a meditative exploration of transformation and inner life.
The evening concludes with Mussorgsky’s monumental “Pictures at an Exhibition.” With its vivid tonal palette and sweeping narrative, Luo will transform the keyboard into a canvas, unfolding a sonic and visual journey for the audience.
