This September, Shenzhen Concert Hall is offering three free concerts for local music fans.

On Sept. 6, cellist Trey Lee will present a lecture concert as part of the “Beautiful Sunday” series, sharing personal stories and performing carefully selected pieces. As the first Asian to win the International Janigro Cello Competition, Lee has captivated audiences with his profound emotional depth, mature and intelligent interpretations, and brilliant technique. The late conductor Lorin Maazel, after conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra with Lee, called him an “amazing soloist” and “extraordinary cellist.” The New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini praised him as an “excellent cellist with a full, robust tone and nuanced expressiveness.” 

A regular soloist with world renowned orchestras, Lee is equally dedicated to exploring the cello’s lyrical potential, venturing into composition and championing contemporary music.

He will be joined by young pianist Lu Ming to perform Western classics alongside cello arrangements of contemporary Chinese works.

On Sept. 19, Li Xinlin, associate professor of accordion at Shenzhen Arts School, will lead outstanding students from the school in a program featuring works by Piazzolla, Mussorgsky, Grieg, and the beloved piece “China in the Lights.” Young cellist Ying Jian will perform alongside them. Audiences will discover the accordion’s boundless possibilities – a “symphony orchestra in your pocket.”

On Sept. 26, young pianists Na Jia and Li Yan, along with outstanding students from the School of Music at Shenzhen Technology University, will present a program for piano four hands (and eight hands), including Piazzolla’s “Le Grand Tango,” Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from “The Nutcracker,” Saint Saëns’ “Fossils” from “Carnival of the Animals,” Schubert’s “Marche Militaire,” Grieg’s “Morning Mood” from the “Peer Gynt Suite,” and Joe Hisaishi’s scores for “Howl’s Moving Castle.”
