Sonnet Stanfill, acting senior curator of the Department of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London, will give a free talk titled “Presenting Fashion Through Exhibitions” in Shekou. No sign-up is required.

Stanfill joined the V&A in 1999, with research focusing on fashion production and consumption in the 20th and 21st centuries. Her exhibitions include New York Fashion Now (2007) and co-curation of Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 (2012). She has also served on the curatorial team for Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. One major exhibition curated by Stanfill, The Glamour of Italian Fashion (2014), toured to four venues in North America from 2015 to 2017.

Sonnet holds an MA in the history of dress from the Courtauld Institute of Art and is chair of its alumni board. In 2017 Stanfill joined the advisory board of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Paris and Marrakech. Before working as a curator, Stanfill was a retail buyer in San Francisco and New York.

Fashion exhibitions have played an important role in transforming the V&A in recent years. In this talk, senior fashion curator Stanfill will explain fashion’s place in one of Britain’s preeminent national art museums and will elaborate upon some of the fashion exhibitions she has worked on at the V&A. She will also touch upon the V&A’s desire to maintain a balance between scholarship and spectacle within their work on fashion exhibitions, and the seemingly endless public fascination with the subject.
