Shenzhen Museum is organizing a series of workshops and cultural events this summer vacation. Some events require attendees to sign up at Shenzhen Museum’s WeChat (iszbwg) or at its service counter when details of sign-up are announced in advance of each event. This week, three events will be held.

Documentary

“Volcano,” the first episode of BBC documentary “Earth: The Power of the Planet,” will be shown. The five-episode series is presented by geologist Iain Stewart. The documentary is in English with Chinese subtitles. No sign-up is needed and the seats will be given on a first-come-first-served basis.

Decoupage

Children aged above 6 are invited to join the decoupage workshop and each child must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees should sign up at the service counter of the museum before the event by showing ID cards. The seats will be given on a first-come-first-served basis. Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements. Commonly, an object like a small box or a plate is covered by cutouts from magazines. Each layer is sealed with varnishes until the “stuck-on” appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work. The traditional technique used 30 to 40 layers of varnish which were then sanded to a polished finish.

Pottery

Museum staff will give a guide to attendees aged above 6 to the ongoing exhibition of treasures from the Northern Dynasties (386-581) unearthed in Shanxi Province. After that, they will make pottery. Attendees should sign up at the service counter of the museum before the event by showing ID cards. The seats will be given on a first-come-first-served basis.
