This week, six bands will perform live, bringing a variety of musical styles to the stage.
Flash the Readies is a Czech postrock band with hints of alternative rock and psychedelic. They emphasize on strong melodies with ambient and cinematic touches. They have come a long way since their formation in 2006 when they started as an indie rock band, and have since evolved into mainly instrumental on their previous album “Submarine Sky” (2014) and entirely post rock on “Kayos” (2016).
While She Sleeps is an English metalcore band from Sheffield. Formed in 2006, the group consists of vocalist Lawrence Taylor, guitarists Sean Long and Mat Welsh, bassist Aaran McKenzie and drummer Adam Savage. The band released EP “The North Stands for Nothing,” in 2010 and followed it up with two studio albums, “This Is the Six” and “Brainwashed.” At the Shenzhen event, they will promote their third album “You Are We” released in April. They received the Best British Newcomer Award at the Kerrang! Awards in 2012.
While She Sleeps’ musical style has often been described as metallic hardcore by reviewers. They have cited post-hardcore, hardcore punk and alternative metal bands such as Thrice, Slipknot, Foo Fighters, Underoath, Refused, Comeback Kid, Gallows and Alexisonfire as musical influences.
The band’s sound typically features heavily down-tuned guitars, thick bass tones, screamed vocals and fast-paced drumming, occasionally complimented by melodic guitar tones and piano interludes. When questioned about the progression between their debut EP “The North Stands for Nothing” and their 2012 studio album “This Is the Six,” guitarist Welsh said they have not changed their sound drastically, saying “it’s super heavy but then it’s melodic too.”
Adaen is a Russian progressive rock and post metal band formed in 2009 and their first EP is “Dancing Metropolis Burial.” After a few changes in lineup, Valentin Berezin, the creator and the mastermind of Adaen, is now the only remaining original member. Influences of progressive rock bands such as Muse, Tool, Rush, The Mars Volta and Meshuggah are traced in Adaen’s music.
Anti-war themes take a very important place in the band’s songs. Adaen stands for freedom and equality for all people. The band has played at different festivals with bands Tera Melos, Riverside, Junius, Tesseract, Horse the Band, Naive and many others.
Japanese postrock group Presence of Soul is led by female singer Yuki, who also plays guitar and keyboard. Zhou Yunpeng and Xiao He are well-established ballad singers. Dean Wang is a young pop singer who was on the TV show “The Voice of China” in 2015.
