Handshake 302, a contemporary art project initiated by Shenzhen-based U.S. anthropologist Mary Ann O’Donnell, is welcoming primary school, middle school and high school students to attend a free summer camp in Longhua District on July 17-29.
Titled “Handshake School,” the summer camp is a community-based art education event. The organizers aim to build connections among urban communities through art education and build co-living and collaborative relationships among people through creative activities.
At the camp, students will learn about the city’s history and natural environment and try to understand other people through doing collaborative work. The organizers say they hope students will be empathetic with others, be curious about the world and be confident in themselves.
At the camp, students will study with local professional artists and scholars and do community work in Longhua. Recommendation letters will be written by the organizers if some students request them for future work or study.
The application deadline is July 15 (high school students) or July 17 (primary school and middle school students).
Based in Baishizhou in Nanshan District, the Handshake 302 project mainly researches the urban village Baishizhou through art, theater and documentary projects.
The organizers regularly invite contemporary artists from around the world to live in Baishizhou to do projects.
Since last year, the Handshake 302 organizers have been collaborating with Dalang subdistrict in Longhua to do artistic and educational projects for local children.
