A night of classics
Futian Government Online 2017-07-07 09:24

Classical music enthusiasts are sure to find something vibrant to enjoy during this Friday’s show at Shenzhen Concert Hall.

Tan Dun, known for his award-winning scores in films such as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” will be conducting the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra through a program rich with talent and culture.

The program is set to begin with Manuel de Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance,” a movement from the Spanish composer’s ballet “The Bewitched Love.” Expect a frantic and exciting welcome.

After that, Chinese violinist Ning Feng will collaborate with the orchestra to present concerto “Hero,” which was composed by Tan for the 2002 martial arts movie “Hero” and was nominated for Best Original Film Score at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

The concert’s theme of passion continues with Liu Wenwen’s suona performance “A Hundred Birds Paying Respect to the Phoenix,” composed by Guan Xia. The suona is a Chinese double-reeded horn used frequently at outdoor performances in North China. Due to its distinctively loud and high-pitched sound, the suona is able to perfectly imitate bird calls.

Originally a popular folk tune in Shandong, Anhui, Henan and Hebei provinces, “A Hundred Birds Paying Respect to the Phoenix” has also been arranged by Chinese pianist and composer Wang Jianzhong into a piano piece.

An established composer and the head of China National Symphony Orchestra, Guan is known for his respect for Chinese culture. For his creation of “A Hundred Birds Paying Respect to the Phoenix,” he may have either arranged the piece for orchestral purposes or created something entirely new with similar motifs. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see the turnout.

Lastly, what seems to be the centerpiece of this night of music will be the performance of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Firebird” suites.

There are many enchanting choices to look out for on this night, and they are sure to dazzle foreigners and Chinese natives alike.
