Films in French language on show

 

Six French-language films will be shown free of admission at A3+ in OCT-LOFT. The films will have Chinese and French subtitles.

 

‘The Passion of Augustine’

“The Passion of Augustine” is a Canadian drama film directed by Lea Pool. Released in 2015, the film stars Celine Bonnier as Mother Augustine, a Roman Catholic nun who teaches music in a convent school in rural Quebec in the 1960s. She is fighting to preserve her school against the backdrop of the social changes wrought by Vatican II and Quebec’s Quiet Revolution. The film garnered two Canadian Screen Awards at the 4th Canadian Screen Awards in 2016, for Best Actress (Celine Bonnier) and Best Original Score (Francois Dompierre). For the 18th Quebec Cinema Awards, “The Passion of Augustine” received 10 nominations including for best picture and best director.

‘All Cats Are Grey’

“All Cats Are Grey” is a 2014 Belgian coming-of-age drama film directed by Savina Dellicour. Dorothy (Manon Capelle) is a 15-year-old girl who was raised in a well-off residential neighborhood of Brussels. She does not feel comfortable with her daily life, partly because of the detached relationship with her mother (Anne Coesens). By chance, she meets Paul (Bouli Lanners), a 43-year-old man who works as a detective. Dorothy asks him for help in the search for her biological father. Critical response was generally strong and the film received nine nominations at the sixth Magritte Awards, including Best Film and Best Director for Dellicour.

‘Tapis Rouge’

In the suburbs of Lausanne, a group of kids decide to make a film with the help of a social worker. They write a screenplay and then head all the way to the Cannes Film Festival in search of a producer. The film is a journey into another world. The world of a social worker whose enthusiasm will lead to a very tricky situation. A journey that will shake his beliefs and values. Directors Frederic Baillif and Kantarama Gahigiri will meet the audience members after the screening.

Time: 7:30 p.m., March 19

 

‘Hope’

“Hope” is a 2014 French drama film directed by Boris Lojkine. On his clandestine journey from Cameroon to Europe through the Sahara desert, Leonard meets Hope, a Nigerian girl who’s following the same dream. The movie was screened as part of the International Critics’ Week section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival where it won the SACD Award.

Time: 7:30 p.m., March 25

 

‘Hunting the Northern Godard’

“Hunting the Northern Godard” is a 2014 Canadian film directed by Eric Morin. In 1968, an internationally renowned French film director unexpectedly lands in Abitibi, in the northwest of Quebec, to conduct political and mass-media experiments. This event fuels the revolutionary tendencies of Michel, a local young man, and the desire to travel the world of Marie, his girlfriend.

Time: 3 p.m, March 26

 

‘Dead Man Talking’

“Dead Man Talking” is a 2012 Belgian comedy-drama film directed by Patrick Ridremont. Forty-year-old William, an anonymous criminal sentenced to death for murder, is soon to be executed. When William is asked if he wishes to say something before he dies, William starts telling the story of his life and recounts an incredible, moving tale. The movie has been nominated for the Best Foreign Film award at the 39th Cesar Awards.
