Eight researchers from Shenzhen elected to CAS, CAE
Shenzhen Daily 2023-11-27 11:20

Lars Ivar Samuelson, a lecturer at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and the head of the Institute of Nanoscience and Applications, has been elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), SUSTech announced in a press release Nov. 23.

This year, CAS has elected 30 foreign members, as revealed in the official CAS list.

Samuelson’s election marks the second time a faculty member from SUSTech has received such an honor.

Renowned for his contributions to semiconductor nanomaterials, Samuelson joined SUSTech in 2021. Born in Sweden in December 1948, Samuelson was elected as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 2006 and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) in 2007.

Ranjith Pathegama Gamage, an honorary professor at Shenzhen University, has been elected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).

Gamage, born in 1968, is currently a professor at Monash University in Australia. He is an internationally renowned expert in rock mechanics and energy engineering.

Connie J. Chang-Hasnain, a distinguished researcher at Pengcheng Laboratory, has also been elected as a foreign member of CAE. Her research covers vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and high-contrast gratings (HCGs), nanomaterials and nanophotonic devices, and slow and fast light in semiconductors.

In addition to Samuelson, Gamage and Chang-Hasnain’s accolades, five other scientists from Shenzhen were elected as academicians to either CAS or CAE as well. They are Yan Nieng, Zheng Hairong, Huang Sanwen, Li Qingquan, and You Xiaohu.

Yan, a world-renowned structural biologist, is the founding president of the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation that was officially inaugurated earlier this week.

Zheng is vice president of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), focusing on medical imaging and medical instrumentation systems, and acoustic/magnetic biophysics.

Huang is a researcher at the Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen (AGIS) under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS). He and his team made breakthroughs in developing pure and fertile potato lines with genome-editing technologies, revolutionizing potato breeding and benefiting farmers and consumers alike.

Li, secretary of the Party committee of Shenzhen University, has been engaged in research of innovative theories and autonomous equipment for dynamic precision engineering surveying, a field that is at the forefront of international academia in the convergence of surveying, mapping, civil engineering, and information disciplines.

You, who currently serves as the deputy director of Pengcheng Laboratory, was elected as a member of CAS. He has been engaged in theoretical and practical research in mobile communications for over 30 years.
