■ Exploring the heart of Futian with my son

I'VE lived in Shenzhen for about four years now and have had lots of varied experiences in this young, paradoxical city.I met my Chinese wife in England, where I'm from, and we had our son there before choosing to move here because this is where she grew up.It can be difficult in any city in the world to find places to go as a family without spending lots of money. The park I regularly visit with my family is Lianhua Hill Park and its surrounding area, where I feel all the pomp of modern China. He ' s been working in education over the period for different companies around the city .

■ A pleasant trip to Huaqiangbei

THERE are two reasons why anyone would want to go to the Huaqiangbei electronics market—the largest electronics market in Asia—here in Futian District:Either you are curious and have time to kill or you are on a specific mission to buy or get something repaired.Furthermore, while back in the States we visited an Apple store in Houston and were told that repairs would cost US$.Navigating the endless maze of noisy shops sitting side by side feels like visiting exhibit booths at a major convention hall, except that here the booths are much smaller.

■ Tour Futian with me

I’VE lived in Futian District for several years now, and at this point I consider it my home. Every so often I find myself a kind of amateur tour guide, whenever I have a guest visiting from afar. Relatives or old friends expect me to show them around the center of Shenzhen, and I’m happy to do so.

■ Expat volunteers in action

“LAOSHI (teacher), laoshi, for you!” exclaimed Chenglei, extending his arm and offering me a fresh batch of mollusk shells of different shapes and sizes. We were hunting seashells by Egong Bay, on Pearl Island in Nan’ao, eastern Shenzhen. The group included 45 other kids just like Chenglei, who live all throughout China while one or both of their parents work in Shenzhen, trying to provide a better standard of living for their families. It was day two of our weekend getaway organized by Futian District Government, aiming to let these kids visit Shenzhen and enjoy some attractions that may not be as readily available back home.

■ Enjoying open mics at Coco Park

Although increasing numbers of foreign nationals are living in Shenzhen, many of whom do interesting and important work, the cluster of expatriates here cannot seriously be called a community. Unlike Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur, Shenzhen has not developed to such a point.

■ Small businesses driving Futian’s development

Local businesses collectively define Futian by shaping where and how its residents shop, eat and have fun. Futian would never be the exciting and lively hub it’s noted as without its numerous local businesses.

■ Culture thrives in Futian village of Shuiwei

When you first arrive in Shenzhen, especially from abroad, it can be difficult to tell east from west in such an internationalized city. You go to Coco Park and its environs because it appears to be a city center. And while these places are beautiful, impressive and modern, one can’t help but wonder: Is this truly the culture of China?

While I was buying an apple Tuesday at the big fruit stand near the intersection of Lianhua Road and Jingtian Road, I chatted a bit with the vendor about the heavy clouds and rapidly approaching rain.
